Jews of the Civil War: Soldiers and Spies

Instructors: Les Bergen, M.B.A., retired engineer and federal financial professional; treasurer, Southern Jewish Historical Society; lecturer and guide, Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington; Robert Marcus, co-producer and co-writer of the film “Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray”
In the first session, Les Bergen will present a lively talk on key Jewish figures of the Civil War known as spies and pols. Meet seven Jewish Southerners with Washington connections: a Confederate spy and her pro-union former congressman husband; a career Army officer whose siblings were secessionists, but married into a prominent Philadelphia family; a Jewish VMI cadet who became a knighted sculptor; one of the first female hospital administrators, honored on a U.S. postage stamp; the first two Jewish U.S. Senators, one became a Confederate Senator and the other Secretary of State of the Confederacy.
Fee: $18/ $12 member (special 50% discount for veterans)
In the second session of this class, November 12, Bob Marcus will introduce his noteworthy film and will answer questions after the screening. This special Veterans Day program is a collaboration with Thursday at the J and Project Welcome Home and is sponsored by the Jewish War Veterans of the USA
