Book Talk with Michael Sharnoff, author of Nasser’s Peace: Egypt’s Response
to the 1967 War with Israel

Instructor: Michael Sharnoff, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Middle East Studies, Daniel Morgan Graduate School of National Security

Michael Sharnoff’s new book analyzes Nasser’s public and private perspectives on peace in the immediate aftermath of Israel’s stunning victory in the Six-Day War. In the period that followed the war, Nasser brilliantly played Moscow, Washington, and the United Nations to maximize his bargaining position and maintain his unique leadership role in the Arab world. Relying on recently declassified primary sources, Sharnoff sheds new light on how a developing country can rival world powers and how fluid the definition of “peace” can be.
