Admiral Hyman Rickover (the father of the modern Navy), Judith Resnick (mission specialist on the Challenger space shuttle), Frank Lautenberg (U.S. Senator from New Jersey), and Charlene Schiff (Holocaust survivor and Alexandria resident). These are among the 5,600 Jews buried at Arlington National Cemetery since 1864. The buried range from Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Jews to non-religious, converts, German, Czarist and Soviet Jews. All either served in the military from the Civil War to the present, or they were spouses of veterans. Most were ordinary soldiers and sailors, but many were officers with significant responsibilities. A few were prominent after military service as members of Congress, Supreme Court justices, ambassadors and astronauts. Les will join us to talk about these and other notable Jews buried at this beautiful cemetery overlooking Washington.
