Jewish Life in Argentina: A Look at This Large and Vibrant Community

Presenter: Adriana M. Brodsky, Associate Professor, St. Mary’s College of Maryland and BEHC member

Argentina has the largest Jewish population in Latin America and one of the largest in the world. Adriana will explain how Jews first settled in this country and will focus on those who later came to Argentina in the early 20th century where they developed the most vibrant Jewish community in Latin America. (Did you know the only other
kosher McDonald's, other than in Israel, is in Argentina?) Her presentation will highlight the ways in which the Ashkenazim (Jews of European origin) and Sephardim
(those primarily from Spain or Portugal) created communal institutions, including synagogues and cemeteries, throughout Argentina and found common ground on important issues. The presentation will include information on community  organizations, food, women and marriages. Adriana recently completed her book, Sephardi, Jewish, Argentine.
