Expansion in the Works For NV Rides

Help Us Celebrate Five Years of NV Rides

NV Rides continues to grow and thrive in Northern Virginia by supporting a network of volunteer driver programs that assist seniors who are aging in place.

NV Rides recently secured a two-year grant through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWASHCOG) to expand the successful model of networked volunteer driver programs into neighboring jurisdictions. Prince William County will be the first area of focus, as there is a growing population of aging adults with very few transportation options for non-driving seniors in need.

The new grant has also enabled NV Rides to grow the marketing team to support expansion efforts.  Rachel Simon (Marketing and Outreach Coordinator) and Anna Persky (Media and Communications Coordinator) have joined the NV Rides team to support Program Manager Jennifer Kanarek with these efforts. In addition to bringing on new partners, the marketing team will be working with current partners to explore creative ways to grow the base of volunteer drivers.

Since inception in 2014, NV Rides has partnered with Fairfax County and the Jewish Council on Aging to support 13 community groups that are delivering on average about 12,000 rides a year to non-driving adults over the age of 55. As NV Rides prepares to celebrate its five-year anniversary in the fall, the organization is in the process of revamping the website to make it more user-friendly and accessible to all.

We look forward to inviting our partners and volunteers to the 5th year birthday party celebration in October — stay tuned for details.

  • The length of your commitment depends on your availability. J Rides provides volunteer drivers access to our ride scheduling software that lets you select your driving assignments, offering volunteers a flexible schedule. You can volunteer as little or as much as you’d like.
  • Volunteers do not have to be J members.
  • All volunteers must complete an application and attend a brief orientation.
  • NV Rides will pay for a required background and a DMV check for all volunteer drivers.
  • Volunteers are required to have a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please call 703.537.3074 or email jrides@theJ.org.

J Rides is supported by NV Rides. NV Rides is a network of service providers aiming to enhance and improve volunteer transportation throughout the region.  In partnership with Fairfax County and Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA), and with additional support from The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, the Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (The J) is administering this community-wide initiative so that more non-driving older adults will be able to get where they need to go at no cost, and “age in place” for as long as possible.
