Celebrating our Children's Creativity
June 14-July 12, 2011

The JCCNV's Early Childhood Services department presented "A Reggio Exhibit" which showcased the special philosophy of teaching art being used by the program.  Beginning after WWII in Reggio, Italy and based upon the ideas that children have a say over the direction of their learning, are able to learn by using all their senses, by relating to each other and the exploration of materials, and by being encouraged with endless ways of expressing themselves.  The exhibit features long term topic studies from classes ranging from infants to four years of age.

 Washington Jewish Photographers Salon

This class was an opportunity for photographers to share and discuss their pictures, guided by Lloyd Wolf, noted Jewish documentary and photojournalist and artist. Work was shared and evaluated, and each participant received supportive individual and group attention. The primary emphasis was on aesthetics and problem solving, creating effective and meaningful images. The group also shared and explored technical aspects of using 35 millimeter SLR or quality digital cameras.

Finding Your Way in Clay: Pinch, Slab, Coil

Students experienced the joy of working in wet clay while exploring their creative side. Traditional hands-building techniques, texturing surfaces and carving were tuaght along with the use of colorful nontoxic underglazes.  Firings were also provided for their decorative or functional stoneware pieces.

Kids Creative Clay

Educators have found that art and art-related classes are highly important in developing learning and problem solving in other areas, such as science and math.  This class was a chance for children to explore and enoy this medium.  Projects emphasized sculpture and animal creatures using age-appropriate hand-building techniques. Wonderful under-glazes and glazes gave students an opportunity to embellish their work while learning color mixing, care of art materials and a bit of pottery history.
