Jewish Geography Returns!
Preserving Memory: The Jews of Cape Verde
Instructors: Carol Castiel, President of the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project and Carlos Veiga, Cape Verde’s Ambassador to the U.S.
Our occasional series “Jewish Geography,” highlighting Jewish communities around the world, some in places that might surprise you, returns with a study of the Jews of
Cape Verde. The Republic of Cape Verde, an archipelago of ten islands in the Atlantic Ocean, is situated about three hundred miles off the coast of Senegal, West Africa. We’ll discover how Jews came to be in such an unusual location, what their lives and culture were like, and what is being done to preserve the legacy of this once-vibrant Jewish community.
