The Jewish Identity Project September 2, - October 28, 2008 Janet Boltax, artists and painter who uses bold color and strong strokes to create her portraits. Along with her painting of people, she is enthralled with capturing the faces from a different order. Included in this show are her original etchings of the big ages. Diane Leshin designs handbags using innovative crochet techniques and a multitude of vibrant fibers, textures and colors. Fully lined, the unique handbags scream to be touched, catch the eye and capture the imagination. Jewish Washington: Scrapbook of an American Community October 28—December 16, JCCNV The Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington’s award-winning exhibition at the JCCNV includes archival photographs and historic documentation of local Jewish life. Its narrative begins in 1795 with Washington’s first Jewish resident, and continues through current times to celebrate the region's Jewish community of more than 215,000 members.
“This is an exciting chance for the complete story of the Jewish community and its important role in the growth of Northern Virginia to be told,” says Laura Cohen Apelbaum, Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington (JHSGW) Executive Director. Included are descriptions of local Jewish families and congregations and their role in the economic and social development of the city and its northern Virginia suburbs. The Society’s archives include donations of personal and family papers, photographs, organizational records, oral histories, and other memorabilia documenting the local Jewish experience. They are looking to build its Northern Virginia collections to preserve this history for generations to come. This one-woman show tells the entertaining and true-life story of Anna Shulman, her arrival in the U.S., residence in Washington and her impact on her H Street neighborhood, home to Jewish merchants in the 1920s and ‘30s. Contemporary students unfamiliar with their not-so-distant heritage will learn how immigrants such as Anna repaid their debt of welcome by helping subsequent new arrivals. Joann is a painter ceramicist whose current body of work reflects her whimsical approach to traditional subjects. With bright colors and fluid lines, Joann expresses her vivid imagination with humor and enchantment. Whatever her medium, she executes her pieces with creativity and talent. David Greenbaum has honed his skill as a potter over many years. His pottery today reflects the unique designs and classic forms of his original style. These pots radiate tranquility and harmony and reflect his joy of working with clay. He strives for perfection of form, craftsmanship of his carving and finishing. The result is his unique style that glows with perfection. Featured Artists’ Discussion: The Journey December 16, 6:30pm—8pm, JCCNV The fine arts committee invites you to come meet Joann Wells Greenbaum and David Greenbaum to learn about the source of their inspiration and what it is like to have long careers as artists. Washington Jewish Photographers Salon With facilitator Lloyd Wolf These club gatherings are an opportunity for photographers to share and discuss their pictures, guided by Lloyd Wolf, noted Jewish documentary photojournalist and artist. Work is shared and evaluated, with each participant getting supportive individual and group attention in mastering photographic skills and ideas. The primary emphasis is aesthetics and problem-solving to create effective and meaningful images. This is a non-darkroom program. The group will also share and explore technical aspects of using 35 millimeter SLR or quality digital cameras.
The club will meet, starting in the fall, on Tuesdays, once a month for 6 months 8pm—10pm. Members must be prepared to meet on their own in accommodation of Lloyd Wolf’s variable professional calendar. Cost: $36 for Club Membership (6 sessions) Contact
