The brainchild of two energetic and resourceful mothers, Adele Greenspon and Shirley Waxman, the camp was created as a special place where Jewish families across Northern Virginia could come together to sing and dance and celebrate and grow! The camp was envisioned as a day camp modeled on Zionist youth camps, with emphasis on Jewish culture and history, Hebrew taught through songs and dances and LOTS of ruach (spirit). The little camp had no pool or building, but it had people, it had love and the founders had a passion for the camp that was contagious. Many wonderful things were created at Camp Achva--songs and dances and crafts--but most importantly--friendships and Jewish connections. It's no coincidence that today, the JCC of Northern Virginia sits on the land once inhabited by the camp. As we prepare to celebrate our 40th summer of Camp Achva in 2009, we think of its history and how it helped change the landscape of the Jewish community in Northern Virginia.
