Pre-Professional Youth Dance classes are for serious dance students only. Students are expected to come to class on time, to dress appropriately, to participate fully and to be committed to improving as a dance student. Students who do not have the discipline or focus for a pre-professional dance class will be directed to one of our recreational classes. For more information on this program, please reference our dance parent manual. Please note that we do not accept new students into this program after January 31.

Modern Dance

This dance form was created as a rebellion against ballet. Our classes focus on fusion of techniques (Graham, Limon, Horton), floor work and the creative process. Students should wear tan, footless or convertible tights, leotard, and shorts (tight fitting pants can also be worn). No dance shoes are needed, footundeez can be worn. Boys should wear a solid colored t-shirt instead of a leotard.

Ballet

Ballet is a remarkably expressive, nonverbal art form that creates a mood or tells a story through apparently effortless movement. The study of ballet, however, is rigorous and is designed to improve body carriage and coordination. Students should wear appropriate colored leotard for their level (please reference the parent manual), pink footed or convertible tights, pink ballet shoes (also properly fitted pointe shoes for pointe classes). Please, no ballet skirts for Ballet I–III. Hair should be in a neat bun. Boys should wear a solid colored t-shirt instead of a leotard and black ballet shoes. Our ballet classes are instructed in a contemporary style. Technique and vocabulary are a large part of our curriculum; however we encourage creativity and unconventional choreographic structure.

Choreography/Improvisation

Ages: 11–18

Students in this class learn tools to create dances and to develop their own choreography. Pieces are chosen to be presented in our annual dance recital. This class should be taken with a technique class to encourage expansion of vocabulary. Dance attire or comfortable clothing (not too baggy) is acceptable for this class.

A newer dance genre than ballet and tap, jazz inspires dynamic movement and precision. Students should wear tan, leather slip-on jazz shoes, leotard, tan tights, and shorts (pants can also be worn). Boys should wear a solid colored t-shirt instead of a leotard.

Tap Dance

A percussive dance form that takes tremendous rhythm and balance. Students should wear black, leather lace-up tap shoes (no heels), leotard, tan tights and shorts (pants can also be worn). Boys should wear a solid colored t-shirt instead of a leotard.

A high-energy dance form done to the music of rap, R&B and pop. Study of this form develops the student’s sense of creative movement, rhythm, strength and coordination. Registration for this program is closed.

We have two performance-based dance companies that invite dancers to participate in the program after they attend our annual Dance Company audition—held in August each year. The Company program runs from September–June. Students who participate in this Company must take a minimum of four hours of dance per week and participate in summer dance lessons. Private and Semi-private Dance Lessons

New this year, performance-based lessons are being offered for our pre-professional dancers. Dancers who pay for ongoing private lessons are able to bring their dances to competition and to perform in our evening Annual performance. Permission by the Dance Director is required for private/semi-private lessons based on availability—please speak to Alicia Ronquillo to schedule lessons.
